On the second Saturday of the month the Taino Cultural Center has its monthly meeting. We discussed plans for the upcoming season. A new year has arrived and we look forward in anticipation to sound the call of the Taino to the 4 sacred directions.

For some months now our Brothers & Sisters in Boriken The Concillio Taino in union with the Nacion Taina have been constructing a drum. Making a Mayowakan (Taino Drum) requires alot of skill & patience.

THE MAKING OF A MAYOWAKAN IS A COMMUNAL TASK. THE DRUM IS LADEN WITH THE MAKERS HOPES & DREAMS

At the conclusion of the meeting it came time to unwrap the Mayowakan that had just arrived from Boriken

As I pealed the layers of Cardboard I saw these eyes peering at me. I was in complete utter awe of such a masterly crafted work of Art. I was startled by the awesome Power radiating from this Sacred Gift. I immediately took out some Tabonuco and the Council Members proceeded to bless the Drum.
We commenced with an Areito (sacred dance) The drum as beautiful as it is Rocked with such Power. The Dancers increased there intensity. All were in agreement . We were told that the Drum depicts the Taino Deity BAIBRAMA.

As an Artisan it does my Heart good to know that there are people out there who take Taino Art so seriously. On behalf of Cacike Cibanacan & Boriuex & all the members of The Nacion Taina de Las Antillas from the bottom of our Hearts I thank Cacike Opiyel. Beike Jose, Tekina Dori, Elvira, Rafa, Diana & all the members of the Concillio Taino for such a open hearted gesture of Love.

Thank You Concillio
